This is a recent portrait I did of a friend. I used the grisaille method, that is using only shades of gray. I mixed French Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber to make the grays. For a bit of whimsy I added very loose strokes at the bottom to represent the fringe on her scarf. I allowed the gray to drip and in the process the blue, which is heavier than the umber, separated, leaving just a hint of blue at the bottom.
This painting was awarded honorable mention by the amazing watercolor artist/juror, Chris Krupinski, in the McLean Art Society's juried Ramp exhibition..
